Famous Dogs: This light hearted article takes a look at the of the world's most famous dogs and the names of owners. Some of our favorites are famous cartoon dogs, loved by kids and adults alike. Just think of the Lady and the Tramp, Scooby Doo, Goofy, Huckleberry Hound and "Santa's Little Helper"! Famous dogs in history are also mentioned such as 'Thisbe' the little Papillon dog owned by Queen Marie Antoinette and Laika the Russian Sputnik dog. Famous dogs of the modern era are not forgotten, such as "Bo" and "Sunny" the names of the Portuguese Water Dogs owned by President Barack Obama.

Famous Dogs - Scooby Doo: The famous cartoon dog in the TV series Scooby Doo is based on a lovable Great Dane. The US voice actor Don Messick was the original voice of Scooby-Doo from 1969 until 1997.

Famous Dogs - Goofy: The famous cartoon dog Goofy, based on a bloodhound, featured in a series of Walt Disney cartoon movies. The character "Goofy" first appeared in 1932 was the good natured, gangly, clumsy bloodhound who always tried his best. 

Famous Dogs - "Santa's Little Helper": The famous cartoon dog "Santa's Little Helper" is based on a greyhound and features in 'The Simpsons' cartoon television series. The famous cartoon dog "Santa's Little Helper" first appeared in 1989 in the Christmas TV special "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" in which Homer and Bart Simpson adopt the abandoned, mischievous greyhound.

Famous Dogs - The Lady and the Tramp: The famous cartoon dogs 'Lady and the Tramp' featured in the popular 1955 Disney Movie about a refined female American Cocker Spaniel called "Lady" and her adventures with a street wise mutt called "Tramp". Barbara Luddy, the US voice actress  supplied the voice of Lady, the adorable American Cocker Spaniel.

Famous Dogs - Huckleberry Hound: The famous cartoon dog Huckleberry Hound, a Hanna-Barbera TV series based on a Bluetick Coonhound. Huckleberry Hound was famous for his Southern drawl and his terrible rendition of the song, "My Darling, Clementine"

Famous Dogs - Snowy the Dog: The famous clever, brave cartoon character Snowy the Dog, based on a Wire Fox Terrier, featured in the 'Adventures of Tintin' that was created by Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi.

Famous Dogs - Snoopy the dog: The famous cartoon character Snoopy the dog was based on a Beagle and created for the the long running comic strip "Peanuts" by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz.

Famous Dogs - Tito the Chihuahua (Oliver & Company): The famous cartoon dog Tito the Chihuahua featured in the 1988 Walt Disney feature animation 'Oliver & Company'.

Famous Dogs - Spike the Bulldog (Tom and Jerry Cartoon): The famous cartoon dog Spike the Bulldog featured in the 'Tom and Jerry' series of cartoons created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.

Famous Dogs - Pongo and Perdita (101 Dalmatians Movie): The famous cartoon dogs Pongo and Perdita featured in the 1961 cartoon Disney movie '101 Dalmatians' and tells of how a litter of Dalmatians is kidnapped by the evil Cruella De Vil. The puppies are rescued by their parents, Pongo and Perdita.

Famous Dogs - Max the Sheepdog (The Little Mermaid): The brilliant 1989 Disney Cartoon Movie 'The Little Mermaid' features a Shetland Sheepdog called "Max".

Famous Dogs - Percy the Pug (Pocahontas): In the popular 1995 cartoon Disney movie 'Pocahontas'  a Pug called "Percy"features as Governor Ratcliffe's pet pug.

Famous Dogs - Toto (Wizard of Oz): Toto was the name Dorothy's little Cairn Terrier dog in the famous movie 'The Wizard of Oz' starring Judy Garland that was based on the children's book by L. Frank Baum.

Famous Dogs - "Fluffy" (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone): "Fluffy" was the name given by by Rubeus Hagrid to the three-headed dog that features in the 2001 movie 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. The famous dog was based on being "Cerberus" the Guardian to the Underworld in classical mythology.

Famous Dogs - Cerberus: Cerberus was the famous dog that featured in Greek myths that was described as having three heads and guarded the entrance to Hades, the Greek name for the Underworld

Famous Dogs - "Fang" (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone): "Fang" was another dog that featured in the 2001 movie 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. "Fang" was ferocious looking, but cowardly dog that belonged to the Rubeus Hagrid. in In the Harry Potter books "Fang" is referred to as a "boarhound" but a Neapolitan Mastiff was chosen for the movie because its size and appearance matched the description of Fang.

Famous Dogs - Rover: The first ever canine movie star was a Collie named "Rover" who appeared in the 1905 silent movie called "Rescued by Rover".

Famous Dogs - "Crab": The only dog to feature in a play by William Shakespearean was "Crab" who appeared in "The Two Gentlemen of Verona."

Famous Dogs - "Greyfriars Bobby": The most famous Skye Terrier is "Greyfriars Bobby" was immortalised in the Disney movie of the same name. The tearjerker story tells of the loyal dog who slept on his master's grave for the next 14 years until his own death.

Famous Dogs - "Blondi": Blondi, a German Shepherd, was the favorite dog of Adolf Hitler who used Blondi to make sure his cyanide capsules were lethal. Adolf Hitler used the cyanide capsules to commit suicide after he saw they had worked on Blondi.

Famous Dogs - Lassie: In 1940 the screenwriter Eric Knight created a fictional female Rough Collie character called "Lassie" who was featured in a book called 'Lassie Come-Home'. In 1943, the book was adapted into an MGM movie starring Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall. A male Collie dog called 'Pal' played Lassie and the tradition of using a male dog in the role of Lassie continued in the following 10 movies about the dog.

Famous Dogs - "Flush": Flush was the name of the cocker spaniel owned by the English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning who wrote the famous poem simply called ' To Flush, My Dog '.

Famous Dogs - "Thisbe": Queen Marie Antoinette of France (1755 - 1793)  carried her favorite Papillion dog "Thisbe" on her journey to the guillotine in 1793.

Famous Dogs - "Bullseye": Bullseye was the famous Bull Terrier belonging to the villain Bill Sykes dog in the novel 'Oliver Twist' by Charles Dickens. Bullseye was vicious, having been badly treated by Bill Sykes, but nevertheless was loyal to his owner.

Famous Dogs - Balto: Balto was the name of the lead dog in the team of Siberian huskies who carried Diptheria serum 650 miles from Anchorage to epidemic-ridden Nome in 1925.

Famous Dogs - Rin Tin Tin: Rin Tin Tin was one of the most famous and popular canine movie stars and a German shepherd starred as Rin Tin Tin in 28 Hollywood movies.

Famous Dogs - "Suar": King Eystein Magnusson who ruled Norway from 1103 to 1123 decreed that, as a punishment to his people, that a dog called Suar should rule in his place. Three years passed during which time Suar routinely signed decrees with with paw-prints.

Famous Dogs - "Luath": Luath was the name of the dog owned by the famous poet Scottish Robert Burns and immortalised in The Twa Dugs. It was named after a dog in Ossian's epic poem 'Fingal'.

Famous Dogs - "Argus": Argus was the name of a long-lived dog owned by Odysseus that featured in the Epic poem by Homer. When Odysseus returns from his long voyages he wore the disguise of a beggar and only "Argus" his loyal old dog, recognized him.

Famous Dogs - "Black Shuck": "Black Shuck" is the name of a mythological ghost-hound said to haunt the ancient roads of Norfolk, England. Black Shuck was said to be the size of a calf with blazing red eyes. This legendary ghost dog is said to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his famous book 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.

Famous Dogs - The Sleuth Hound: The 'Sleuth Hound', another nickname for the Bloodhound, derives from the dog owned by the most famous fictional sleuth of all - Sherlock Holmes. A bloodhound is mentioned in the second Sherlock Holmes novel (The Sign of Four) written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930), in which Sherlock Holmes borrows a bloodhound to track down two villains.

Famous Dogs - "Cafall": "Cafall" is reputed to be the dog who was owned by King Arthur of Camelot. Cafall was a mighty dog, brave, loyal and regal and probably an English Mastiff.

Famous Dogs - "Sirius": "Sirius" was attached to the Port Authority Police Department and was the only dog to lose his life in the search and rescue operation at Ground Zero following the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center Terrorist attacks.

Famous Dogs - "Laika" and the Sputnik Dogs: "Laika" was the first dog in space and travelled in the Russian satellite Sputnik 2 on November 3rd,1957 but  sadly died following re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on 4 April 1958. The names of the other famous 'Sputnik Dogs' included Strelka, Belka, Pchelka, Mushka, Damka, Krasavka, Chernushka, Verterok and Ugolek

Famous Dogs - Strelka: Strelka was safely recovered from a Sputnik launched August 19, 1960 and gave birth to puppies. One of the puppie, called Pushinka was presented by Soviet Premier Kruschev to President John F. Kennedy. Pushinka had 4 puppies of her own who JFK referred to as ?pupniks?

Famous Dogs - "Bo" and "Sunny": "Bo" and "Sunny" the names of the Portuguese Water Dogs owned by President Barack Obama and his family who enjoyed the privileges of living at the White House.

Famous Dogs - "Faithful": President Ulysses S. Grant brought a Newfoundland dog named Faithful, belonging to his son Jesse Grant, to the White House.

Famous Dogs - "Laddie Boy": President Warren Harding owned an Airedale called Laddie Boy who had his own chair to sit on at cabinet meetings.

Famous Dogs - "Liberty": President Gerald Ford owned a Golden Retriever called Liberty who gave birth to 9 puppies at the White House.
