Other names for the Bullmastiff: The Bullmastiff is known by the nickname of the "Poachers Beware". Other names for this breed of dog include the Gamekeeper's Night-Dog and English Bullmastiff.

Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Bullmastiff" reflects the breeds ancestry - it was 40% English Bulldog and 60% English Mastiff. The word "Mastiff" derives from the Old French word 'mastin' meaning "great cur". The word 'cur' was used to describe vicious dogs and derives from the Old Norse word 'kurra' meaning "to growl".

Bullmastiff History and Origin: The country of origin of the Bullmastiff breed was in United Kingdom during the 1860's. The Bullmastiff is a cross between the Old English Mastiff and the English Bulldog. The Bullmastiff is often described as a Molosser type dog that shares a common ancestry with the large, powerful dogs of antiquity, including the now extinct Alaunt breed. Bullmastiff History: The predecessors of the Bullmastiff were fighting dogs, used in various baiting exhibitions. The 1835 Cruelty to Animals Act 1835 prohibited the baiting of animals and many of the fighting breeds went into decline. Dog breeders developed the hybrid Bullmastiff to retain some of the characteristics and usefulness of the old breeds, whilst minimizing some of their undesirable traits. The goal of the dog breeders was to produce a cross breed Gamekeeper's Dog that could track fugitives quickly over short distances and would catch thieves without mauling them.

The Bullmastiff breed was developed as a Hunting Dog to hunt large game but it was also used as a guard dog to catch fugitives, intruders and poachers, hence its nicknames of "Poachers Beware" and the "Gamekeeper's Night-Dog". Dog breeders developed the hybrid Bullmastiff to retain some of the characteristics and usefulness of the old breeds, whilst minimizing some of their undesirable traits. The goal of the dog breeders was to produce a cross breed Gamekeeper's Dog.  Their breeding program resulted in the Bullmastiff.

The Bullmastiff was bigger and not as ferocious as the Bulldog and was faster than an English Mastiff. The new Bullmastiff breed could track fugitives quickly over short distances and would catch thieves without mauling them.  The heavy, powerful Bullmastiff was trained to hold the poacher, or intruder, down on the ground until their owner arrived on the scene.  The Bullmastiff was inevitably used by in illegal blood sports but it was was far more docile than its predecessors and therefore unsuccessful as a pit dog. The main role of the Bullmastiff was always that of a hunting and guard dog. The Bullmastiff was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1934.

Bullmastiff Height: The Bullmastiff breed is classified as a large sized dog. The height to the shoulder of a male dog is 25-27 inches (63-69 cm). The height to the shoulder of a female dog is 24-26 inches (61-66 cm).

Bullmastiff Weight: Not surprisingly for a large sized dog, the weight of a male dog is 110-133 pounds (50-60 kg). The weight of the smaller female dog is 100-120 pounds (45-55 kg).
